Local Municipalities Partner to Support Exploration of Small Modular Reactor Opportunities

Birch Hills County, MD of Smoky River, and Northern Sunrise County have joined together to support the exploration of opportunities related to a potential small modular reactor (SMR) project in the region. Recognizing the value of working together, the three communities have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to guide this partnership.

A central element of the MOU is the commitment to develop a revenue-sharing model that ensures equitable benefits among all participating municipalities, should a project proceed in the future. This collaborative approach reflects our shared focus on fairness, regional sustainability, and the long-term prosperity of our residents.

Discussions on the partnership and its next steps will continue beyond the upcoming municipal elections in October 2025, ensuring that newly elected councils are fully engaged in shaping the direction of this initiative.

This regional collaboration highlights the leadership and vision of our communities as we work together to support the exploration of innovative, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions for the future.
